When you are planning a wedding there are quite a few things to take into consideration. First you need to look at your budget.
If your budget is small then of course your wedding and all things related (including the reception) will be small. It may even be that there is not enough money for a reception.
If however, there is money in your budget for a reception then you should look at a few different things in the planning of it.
The reception is basically a party where you and your guests can celebrate the joining of you and your new spouse in matrimony.
When planning a reception you should first decide the time of it. If your wedding is in between mealtimes for example, you will not need to provide full meals to your guests but can instead serve hors d’oeuvres or finger foods. If your wedding is a morning one, you might consider a brunch style reception.
If you happen to have your wedding in the evening, maybe consider a buffet style dinner or a seated dinner. Keep in mind too that all of these styles will come at different prices.
Of course the hors d’oeuvres and finger foods will be the least expensive with the brunch following and then the buffet. Finally the seated dinner is sure to be your most expensive option.
Deciding on a caterer is also an important part of this. You need to get the most for your money so you should check around and not only interview different caterers but also have tasting sessions with each of them. If you are not happy with their food your guests may not be either.
Always try to have a variety of foods to choose from too in case your guests have food allergies or religious diets that will interfere with normal dining. Any caterer should be able to handle things like that. When you have narrowed down your list of caterers, ask them for references and then call the references to see how they performed.
As you can see there are quite a few things to look into when planning your reception but the most important thing is to do things a step at a time so that you do not overtax yourself and stress your way through your special day. If you set small goals on your way to the ultimate goal and meet them, this can actually be a fun thing to plan.
